A New Adventure in Garlic: Planting Unique Varieties for Our Second Harvest

This year, we’re excited to shake things up in our garlic garden. After experimenting with traditional varieties last season, we decided to broaden our horizons and plant some unique types of garlic, venturing beyond the usual choices. This year’s harvest includes Purple Glazer, German Red, and the distinctively bold Elephant garlic. Each of these varieties brings a unique character, offering not only diverse flavors but also the satisfaction of exploring outside the typical garlic scope.

Our Chosen Varieties and Why They Stand Out

Purple Glazer and German Red are both hardneck garlics, known for their hardiness and intense flavor. Hardneck garlic typically produces fewer, larger cloves that are easy to peel, making them ideal for cooking. These varieties also provide us with garlic scapes, a seasonal delicacy that arrives before the bulbs are fully mature, adding early flavor to our dishes.

Elephant garlic, on the other hand, is a departure from true garlic. Technically part of the leek family, it offers a mild, slightly garlicky flavor and a larger-than-life bulb size, which can be a showstopper in the garden and the kitchen. Its leek-like aroma and flavor make it a fantastic addition for those who enjoy a softer, more nuanced garlic taste.

Health Benefits of This Year’s Garlic Varieties

Garlic is a powerhouse in both flavor and nutrition. Here’s a look at what these varieties can offer:

1. Immune Support: Garlic is rich in allicin, an antioxidant compound with antibacterial and antiviral properties, helping to boost immunity naturally.

2. Heart Health: Regular garlic consumption is known to support cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and reducing cholesterol levels.

3. Anti-Inflammatory Benefits: The natural anti-inflammatory effects of garlic can contribute to overall well-being and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

4. Digestive Health: With prebiotic properties, garlic promotes a healthy gut microbiome, supporting digestion and overall gut health.

5. Unique Compounds in Elephant Garlic: This type may offer similar, though milder, benefits to true garlic, making it a great choice for those who want the health perks without the potent garlic intensity.

Storage and Longevity in Our Root Cellar

After curing, these varieties will make their way to our root cellar, where they’ll stay fresh for months. Hardneck types like Purple Glazer and German Red typically keep well for about 4-6 months in a cool, dry cellar. Elephant garlic, with its milder nature, may last a bit less, around 2-3 months, but remains a wonderful addition throughout the winter season. A properly maintained root cellar can help us enjoy these unique garlic flavors deep into the colder months.

Embracing a Bold New Harvest

As we embark on this second garlic season, we look forward to the distinct flavors and culinary possibilities these varieties will bring. Each type represents a step outside the ordinary, adding variety, depth, and richness to our kitchen and our meals.

In gratitude and grounded growth,

Kerry
