This Amabasya culminates on September 17th at 4 am Pacific time, making the approximately 24 hours before this as the window of the new moon.
As usual, it is not advised to start new things or travel during this time as the moon, our source of support, is weakened.
In the Vedic calendar all Full and New Moons are celebrated, though some hold a stronger importance, and this is one of them. This new moon marks the end of Pitri Paksha, the new moon of the ancestors where they are worshipped in the 15 day cycle ending up in this New Moon. A small remembrance of those past is sufficient, though in India there can be elaborate rituals done in this fortnight cycle.
Typically the day after the New Moon of the Pitri cycle begins Navaratri, the 9 day cycle of celebration of the Mother Goddess. This year there is a one month gap in between, called Adhika mas, or the lost month.
This occurs approximately every 3 years, and is used in the Vedic Calendar to sync up the Solar and the Lunar calendar, which differ by 11 days every year.
Adhika Mas is considered a very spiritual month, and because of that is not used for material celebrations. Things like marriages, first feedings, and important celebrations are not done in this month. If you can, it’s best to wait until mid October to perform things of this nature, or any other important material activity. As the spiritual significations are stronger, it is much more of a time for spiritual practice.
Mars has also begun its retrograde cycle, beginning in its own sign of Aries then cycling back into Pisces, and going direct on November 13th.
Retrograde planets become stronger in their significations, so the fiery, assertive, aggressive and possibly destructive force of Mars becomes high during this time. Mars is impulsive, and that energy will be at its height from now until October 3rd through the transit in Aries. Here in California, it does not bode well for fire season, where already so much is on fire! While Mars’ energy can help us to get things done, Mars also gives us the tendency to not think things through and act aggressively. Be sure that this fiery power of Mars does not set too much ablaze in your own worlds!
