This full moon culminates in the sign of Libra and the lunar house of Vishaka on May 7th at 4:15 pm IST(3:45 am PST). Libra is a sign ruled by Venus indicating relationships, aesthetics and beauty. Moon feels comfortable enough in the relational sign of Libra, and in the Jupiter ruled nakshatra of Vishaka, which is also connected to intense relationally and the desire to partner.
Full moons are always a time of connectivity and community, but this particular full moon intensifies the desire many of us feel to reconnect with people after a stretch of solitude. Moon is receiving the aspects of the Sun, Mercury, Rahu and Saturn, which will add some anxiety and restlessness to what is otherwise a strong full moon.
This moon is also celebrated as Buddha Purnima- the full moon where Gautama Buddha took birth, reached enlightenment and left the body in the Buddhist tradition. For Hindus this same full moon is Kurma Jayanti, the birthday of Lord Vishnu in his form as a Tortoise. Buddha and Kurma (the tortoise form) are both considered incarnations of Vishnu. In astrology, Kurma relates to Saturn and Buddha to Mercury. If you feel compelled and connected to either of these deities, prayers to either Buddha or Vishnu are particularly potent now.
With Mars moving out of Capricorn we saw the strength of the police force (Mars) lessen, and some return of hope as the malefic influence on Jupiter reduced. It felt like for a moment we were moving forward, and in a way we certainly are. From almost exactly the day of the transit on May 4th life started to open up a bit again and the world breathed a sigh of relief.
I wish I could say that was it and we will now be able to move forward. But we have 3 planets going retrograde between 11-15th of May. This is not common to see 3 planets go retrograde in such a small period of time. Retrogression starts by planets slowing down, becoming stationary, then starting the ‘backwards’ motion. Astronomically speaking planets don’t actually move backwards but only appear to do so from our vantage point on earth. But the energy they create is one of feeling stuck and not feeling like we are moving forward. Retrogression tends to internalize the natural indications of the planet and create more obsessiveness and psychological anxt in the process. They make situations more complex than they need to be, and cause us to turn inward and reflect, and often obsess and worry. Didn’t we do enough of that in the last few weeks??
It appears that this opening up of society followed by the almost immediate retrogression of 3 planets indicates the frustrations that will occur for many of us in the upcoming weeks. We will want to return to normal but instead will find ourselves stuck, questioning our value systems (Jupiter), our responsibilities and structures (Saturn) and even our relationships (Venus). Perhaps this retrograde cycle is a universal reminder that the recent events have revealed structural deficiencies in our lives and societies that need even more internalized reflection. We are not fully able to move forward perhaps because the retrogression indicates a complexity that is not yet fully understood.
It is important to remember that we are evolving as always, and it is imperative not to lose hope. Jupiter becoming less afflicted important in sustaining optimism, and Rahu will soon shift out of his challenging lunar house of Ardra- more on that next time!
In the meantime, do the best you can to move forward (even in baby steps!) and do be in touch if I can help you in any way.
Love and Blessings,
