Spread the love

Trends can be fun and comical to witness in the world of design, not just in interiors but in fashion. Lately, I have seen a resurgence of the late 80s and early 90’s clothing styles making a comeback. Let’s hope that is not the case for interiors!!

I work with many clients, primarily all over the state of Califonia, and by the time I get halfway through the year I tend to see some common themes popping up. Last year there were requests over and over for blue kitchen cabinets, not just any blue but a moody dark blue. This year I thought it would be fun to highlight the top requests I am getting from my clients.

  1. Kitchen Cabinets: Two primary colors that have been requested are a muted brown and a mid-tone green. Both of these colors will hide dirt and grime really well, the natural earth tones do help in that aspect, but the darker in tone you go in any color the more dirt and fingerprints one can see.

  1. Wallpaper in the bathroom: Keeping the main finishes more neutral in some aspects and adding a punch of pattern with vibrant wallpaper.

  1. Mixed Metals: Don’t get me wrong, if you have the chance to match the metal finishes in your home such as cabinet hardware, faucets, appliances, and lighting it’s great to be able to do so. However I personally do not feel like mixing metals is a bad thing, I love the more eclectic look of brushed brass and matte black in one space or polished chrome also with matte black.

  1. Flooring trends are some of my favorites, you can find really inventive things always happening in this area. I love defining a bathroom floor with tile but in this day and age, we also have SPC Luxury Vinyl Planks that give you a waterproof wood look. Regardless if you are buying SPC, engineered hardwood, or real hardwood I see my clients asking for more of a natural white oak, or a bleached wood look. Something that gives a light and airy, beachy vibe is generally the request.

Whatever the trend maybe if you love it, lean into it. There is a famous designer, Bunny Williams, who once said “If you love something it will work. That’s the only real rule”. I stand by this statement even if something goes out of “style”. If it sparks joy in your home then it will never really go out of style.

Dream. Design. Redefine.
