As you step into this new year it is a great time to take a look at your home surrounding and see the reflection of the past year and the energy that surrounds you. If we look at our bodies, we can see how our energy changes by the food we eat, the amount of exercise we get and how well we take care of ourselves emotionally and mentally as well. So if we look at our home and work spaces, it is very similar, as the energy we put in has a direct result in our outer world. Our living and work spaces can say a lot about how we have been feeling and by shifting the energy here, we can also make changes in the circumstances in our lives.
I have been interested in clearing spaces since I was a child and had a number of very traumatic events happen that brought me into wanting to have control in my outer world. I felt that if I could control my surrounding space, I would find balance. I was very deliberate in the way I kept my bed, my toys and my clothes. I once asked my mom if we could wash my dolls clothes, hang them on the line, iron and fold them into their own drawer. I have relaxed a lot around this level of detail and thank goodness, but this practice of finding balance is still with me and helps me to feel more relaxed and calm when my home and office space are in order.
I recently started a new practice of sitting in meditation for a short time and really grounding into the energy of what it feels like to be in my home. I first sit and visualize what it feels like to walk through the door and I imagine walking through each room. I can see the blocks I have in my life and where the energy may be stuck when I feel the spaces I am not comfortable in or able to focus clearly on. Then, I open my eyes and actually walk through the house and see the areas in detail that feel good as well as those that do not feel comfortable or clear. It has helped me transform a few areas where I have been blocked.
I’d like to share with you a few ways to help clear energy in your home or work space and start off 2020 with clarity and connection to yourself and find the areas that may be blocked so that you so that you may find success in the areas that you are looking to grow.
1. Be patient
Find just one area that calls your attention. But first, just sit and feel into it and don’t do anything. Listen to what the area has to tell you. I used to find a problem area in my home and then stay up late to push through to clear it. I would typically make it part way through the clutter and become distracted, emotional, tired or too absorbed in something I had found in the pile. My office area sat with piles of papers and mementos of my children for 6 months before I finally was able to sort through it. This process took several weeks to go through bit by bit. It was a slow process that revealed a lot and, now that it is clear, I cannot tell you how rewarding and clean it feels. Baby steps is the key and patience with ourselves will ensure success.
2. Love what you keep (and what you clear!)
I have read and watched many shows on how to clear clutter and use feng shui tools to help you, but nothing has helped me more than to first find love for myself and the place I am in in the moment. Being guilty or ashamed of ourselves really only amplifies and intensifies the energy and how we got stuck there in the first place.
As you sort through your possessions, remember these are things that you love, loved or attracted and that’s how you acquired them in the first place. As you sort through your area(s) go through with love and a state or gratitude. I do not mean you need to feel good about each item you sort, but know that everything is there for a reason. As Marie Kondo says to thank it, I would add, to love it and even sit with it until you feel that you have cleared it. Even if you toss, burn or give away an item, clearing it is helpful as you end a cycle and go forward without any negative energy or remaining guilt or attachment. This is also helpful to whomever may own the object after you!
I challenge us to also find a new way to define the items we sort through as if we even look at the definition of clutter we can see the negative energy around it.
-a condition of disorder, or a lot of objects that are in a state of disorder
– (a lot of objects in) a state of being untidy
– to fill something in an untidy or badly organized way
– a large amount of confusing information
I’m working on the objects that like to gather in places with new found respect as they are just another lesson and reflection of us. As you work in your chosen area, go there with love, you never know what wisdom and gems may be hidden there. Keep listening and love yourself as you go through the process.
3. Enlist support
We are creatures who actually need and thrive with support. Clearing energy in any way in our life is a tender process and even if we do a majority of the work alone, it is extremely helpful to have friends and family who are aware and involved in the process with their love and encouragement. It is also helpful to have one or two people who hold loving attention for us to process what may arise in clearing spaces. You can share with them the feelings, thoughts and reflections that come up as we clear. I want to be very clear that this is not the time for “tough love” or a “spiritual slap”. If we have acquired things that we do not need or do not serve us, this is a time to be held lovingly and supported as making change is brave and raising our vibration happens so much quicker through joy and love.
May this be helpful to you, as we are all a work in progress and I am grateful to share my experience and hear yours as we continue to clear away all that is not in alignment with our highest purpose, goals and brings us closer to our highest truth.
